The health risk to people from H5N1 or avian influenza is extremely low. In a webinar hosted by the World Health Organization, WHO Infectious Disease Epidemiologist Dr. Maria Van Kerkkove said the work is continuing on the consequences from H5N1. “We’re not sitting back and monitoring the situation and watching the situation. There’s a lot of active surveillance ongoing in different animal species and we’re asking for more.” Kerkkove asked for help from scientists, public health professionals and animal health professionals to help assess these viruses.
