The Indian government has asked traders to avoid buying new-crop wheat from local farmers. Following drought in 2022 and 2023, the government-run Food Corporation of India depleted its reserves and is still working to replenish its supply. The FCI is the world’s largest food welfare program and provides free grain to about 800 million people. Sources told Reuters that traders plan to comply with the request. FCI plans to buy at least 30 million metric tons of new-crop wheat this year.
