The University of Minnesota is developing a new form of pest detection. “The satellite system that we’re using is pretty attractive because it has sensors that detect the wavelengths of light or energy that are being reflected by the plant,” explains Extension Entomologist Bob Koch. “Certain parts of that energy being reflected are important for measuring plant health.” The goal is to use satellite imagery to detect crops that have been altered by aphids and other pests. The project is still in the proof-of-concept stage.
