Monitoring grazing in fall can help prevent a negative impact to 2024 forage production. NDSU Extension Livestock Environmental Stewardship Specialist Miranda Meehan advises ranchers to maintain grazing at levels between 40-to-60 percent. Overgrazing could cause severe long-term impacts. “We’ve seen over a 50 percent reduction in forage if more than 80 percent of that grass is removed so that really limits useability of those pastures in the spring.”
