Sugar policy is under fire as appropriations bills are worked through in Washington. Pennsylvania Congressman Scott Perry has proposed an elimination of the no-cost USDA sugar loan program. Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association Executive Director Harrison Weber says they are working diligently to keep the policy in place. “Each year we take a loan out from the government, we pay the growers, store the sugar, process the sugar, sell the sugar, then we pay back that loan with interest.” Harrison offered a message to the sugar program opponents. “The coalition of agriculture is coming together, we’re sticking together and you’re not going to rip us apart.” Click here to listen to the full interview with Harrison Weber.
