Sugarbeet root maggot peak fly activity will begin soon in the southern valley before moving northward. NDSU Extension Entomologist Mark Boetel says granular insecticides should be applied as quickly as possible. “Peak fly activity is probably going to happen a week soon than average.” The warm weather could spur root maggot fly activity on quicker. Boetel says it’s unusual that some of the sugarbeets have not emerged yet this year. “Some fields aren’t even emerged yet, so there may be flies around that don’t have anywhere to lay eggs.”
