With spring in the air, snow melt is happening quickly. SDSU Extension State Climatologist Laura Edwards says the soil is in a good position to absorb a lot of that moisture after a dry fall. “We still see shallow frost under the snowpack, but where the frost is thawed out we’re seeing really good soil moisture. The soil can take up more water from the snowpack than it typically does.” Edwards thinks some farmers in South Dakota could break into fields this week with small grains. “As long as soil temperatures come up, early birds might get in the field in the southern area with small grains.”
