With warm temperatures in the forecast and the snowpack starting to melt off, mud is becoming the new challenge for many farmers and ranchers. NDSU Extension Beef Cattle Specialist Zac Carlson says mud and manure can pose a hazard to cow and calf health. “I think a lot of producers are going from having to calve in snowbanks to having to calve in mud with flood and high-water potential.” Carlson recommends livestock producers put together a plan for bedding their cattle, especially since bedding stocks typically dwindle towards the end of the winter.
