NDSU Extension Sugarbeet Agronomist Mohamed Khan recommends farmers focus on the basics, especially with the likelihood of a wet spring. “Use fungicides in a timely manner and use pre-emergence, soil-applied herbicides to help combat resistant weeds.” Insect control is also another aspect to consider. “The number of root maggot flies have been increasing, especially in the northern part of the valley.” Khan recommends using an insecticide during planting time where there are expected problem areas.
