Lawmakers have introduced legislation that would reform agricultural checkoff programs. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane says this bill has popped up in the last few years. “It’s driven by members of Congress that are deeply engaged in the radical animal rights community.” Lane doesn’t expect this bill to gain much traction. “About half of the things in the bill already occur. There’s already an extensive audit process for checkoff programs, which is one thing listed in the bill.”
