National Cattlemen’s Beef Association secured 100 bipartisan signatures on a congressional letter sent to the USDA requesting an extension of the comment period of the Packers and Stockyards Act last month. NCBA Senior Director of Government Affairs Tanner Beymor says the livestock industry needs more time on the clock to review the rule. “This extension is really important for us to unpack this ruling. The filing spreads 180 pages of the federal register, so having time to review and then respond is important.” Beymor says 45 days is still a tight timeline to work on. “I still don’t know that 45 days is enough time to do all of that. You have to consider this is one of several rules that the department has alluded to. These rules all speak to each other, so it’s difficult to respond to one ruling when you don’t know how the others will play off in practice.”
