The SDSU Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory confirmed the presence of anthrax in a Meade County cow herd. State Veterinarian Beth Thompson says the cattle herd was unvaccinated for anthrax. “Anthrax spores can remain in soil types for a number of years so the infected pasture could be a result of water run-off or cattle grazing too close to the soil.” Anthrax can cause rapid death loss of many animals in a short amount of time. “There is a vaccine available and I always encourage folks to work with their veterinarian.”
