A rail strike would hit North Dakota at the worst possible time. North Dakota Grain Dealers Association Executive Director Stu Letcher says grain elevators are getting ready to ship small grains and soon, the soybeans. “A rail strike at this point would pretty much be devastating to the commercial side of the grain industry. Once the elevator goes full, harvest will be over until we can move grain again. There are huge risks to take.” Letcher says negotiations are pending with two large unions. “There’s a lot of work to be done yet.”
