There’s been an effort by emerging crops to capture specialty crop funding in the next farm bill. This includes the hemp, wild rice and aquaculture industries. “Both the National Potato Council and Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance have come out in strong opposition to that,” said NPC CEO Kam Quarles. “There’s not enough specialty crop money to go around right now. All of the programs are oversubscribed.” Quarles is bracing for a budget-challenged farm bill. “If that comes to pass, the budget for the farm bill will create winners and losers if you move forward with new programs in other areas.”
