Horn flies, face flies and stable flies are the most common and most treated pests on North Dakota livestock operations. NDSU Extension Livestock Systems Specialist Janna Block says fly populations are just reaching their peak now. “The ones that we’re most concerned about on pasture are horn flies and face flies, and they peak about mid-summer.” Out of control fly populations can affect weight loss and milk production. “There’s lots of production issues if left untreated. They can also be a vector for diseases like pink eye and mastitis.”
