According to South Dakota’s Pest Report, there have been reports of large cowpea aphid populations in the southeastern part of the state. Like other potential aphid pests in alfalfa, cowpea aphids can stunt the crop if left unmanaged. It’s common to see population growth after the application of insecticides for a different pest like alfalfa weevils. To stay ahead of cowpea aphid populations, alfalfa should be scouted on a weekly basis through the season.
