Governor Kristi Noem signed six medical cannabis and hemp bills into law. South Dakota Farmers Union Lobbyist Mitch Richter says historically, South Dakota has signed medical marijuana into law. This legislative session saw a lot of hemp and cannabis bills on the governor’s desk. “South Dakota passed medical and recreational marijuana two years ago. What happened was the governor took it to court and the main bill got tossed out. There were lots of marijuana bills, with a regional recreational one that hung around the whole session and died the last week.” Richter says there was a lot of hemp clean-up legislation. “We have legislation that required clean-up on testing and identification. We do have people buying hemp from farmers and farmers who are increasing their crop this year. These bills would help find a place for them to market their hemp and better the supply chain.”
