On Sunday, a third case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was confirmed in a commercial turkey farm in Stearns County, Minnesota. Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen says 36,000 turkeys were depopulated from that farm. According to Petersen, more Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza cases are expected in the state. “I hope we’ve been using biosecurity and won’t transfer this from farm to farm, but the interesting thing is the two announcements from Saturday came from a large commercial flock and also, a backyard flock. That goes to show you can get it into any of the 6,000 poultry farms we have in the state.” Petersen says Minnesota growers should be on high alert. “In 2015, when we had the massive outbreak in Minnesota, we trickled through cases in March and it worsened in April and May. This could be around until conditions warm up.”
