South Dakota is tackling the first avian influenza outbreak since 2015. “It’s kind of like the human flu; there are different strains that go with it,” said Dr. Mendel Miller, assistant state veterinarian. “Some years the strains are mild and other years they’re devastating.” Miller says this particular strain appears to be more severe and is more transmissible among the wildfowl populations.
