Prices peaked earlier this month at $3,100 per car for BNSF and $2,400 per car for Union Pacific. In the latest reporting week, bids for service in February averaged nearly $1,300 per car for both railroads. A week ago, the number of unfilled grain car orders was up over 400 percent. The time from when a customer releases a loaded or empty train and the time the railroad begins to move it to its destination was up more than 150 percent. BNSF cites a mix of extreme weather for shorter trains and multiple outages.
