Soybeans grown in colder climates tend to have a higher essential amino acid content. That’s attractive to buyers who want soybean meal for livestock feed. The Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota Soybean Councils are working together as Northern Soy Marketing to research soybean quality and reach out to buyers around the world. “We market to our customers on the quality of northern grown soybeans and how essential those beans are for livestock diets,” said Katelyn Engquist, market development project manager, Northern Soy Marketing. With new soy crush facilities coming online in North Dakota and Minnesota, Engquist said there may be more opportunities to market soybean meal domestically and build the local livestock industry. “Until then, a lot of our soybean customers are overseas and then, some other customers are importing whole beans, mostly meal.”
