University of Minnesota Cow/Calf Reproduction Extension Educator Eric Mousel says improving or maintaining the weaning percentage of cow herds is an issue everywhere. “We really struggle, particularly with winter and spring calving with calf health. We tend to see weaning percentages around 85 percent so we’re giving up a lot of dollars on the ranch.” Mousel sees a bigger focus on calf health as making a big difference to the bottomline. Profitability can also improve by backgrounding calves. “Pre-conditioning is a rising market and could really be a game changer for adding a few more dollars to the table.”
