In November, Congress passed a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package and then, President Biden signed it into law. For years, lawmakers talked about passing an infrastructure bill, but failed to reach an agreement on the price. This year, lawmakers pushed forward. “One of the appropriate critiques of our transportation system is that it hasn’t been financially sustainable,” said Mike Steenhoek, executive director, Soy Transportation Coalition. “We’ve had to transfer funding from the general treasury to our surface transportation bill and this will continue going forward.” Agriculture responded positively. The new infrastructure package includes $550 billion in new spending over five years for roads, bridges, railroads, ports and waterways. There’s another $65 billion to expand access to the internet across Rural America. “These are some of the links in our supply chain that are really consequential for farmers and agriculture to be profitable.”
