Climate change is showing up in policy including the bipartisan infrastructure package, the Growing Climate Solutions Act and the Build Back Better Act. “The BBB Act includes more than $27 billion in new, additional conservation funding,” said Randy Russell, president, the Russell Group. “The Growing Climate Solutions Act, approved in the Senate, lays the groundwork for carbon markets.” According to USDA Under Secretary of Farm Production and Conservation Robert Bonnie, climate will likely be part of the next farm bill. “As we look at drought across big chunks of the United States, we’ll need to have a conversation ahead of the next farm bill to make sure we have the right tools to help producers.” Carbon credit programs are gaining traction among farmers and ranchers to help improve soil health while bringing in an additional stream of revenue. “This has the potential to grow, but it also depends on the measuring verification and quality of the credits,” said Alejandro Plastina, economist, Iowa State University. “The benefits to the farmer is to get an additional source of revenue for helping the environment.”
