Barge grain movement on the Mississippi River was record low in mid-September. The decline is due to low grain stocks and the impacts from Hurricane Ida. In the midst of market and weather uncertainty, the supply of hopper barges was low to begin the marketing year. USDA says the Gulf area is recovering from the hurricane, but the shipping industry is still facing high fuel and labor costs.
