Agriculture secretaries from the U.S., Mexico and Canada met in Iowa ahead of the World Food Prize announcement on Thursday. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack promoted climate-smart agriculture. “We in the U.S. just launched our strategic plan in regards to climate change and part of it was launched by the president when he initiated the America the Beautiful initiative which is designed to conserve 30 percent of our land and water.” Vilsack said that effort began with an expansion of the Conservation Reserve Program to store carbon over a longer period of time. Vilsack also talked about finding respect with other approaches to cut carbon emissions in different countries.
