In Dickinson, North Dakota, Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange General Manager Larry Schnell says the week of October 7, the auction moved 4,000 head of calves, yearlings and cows. Schnell anticipates moving about 3,500 head on Tuesday and 5,000 head on Thursday this week. “We know there’s going to be a tremendous amount of calves moving in the next six weeks. There’s also a truck and driver shortage. All of those things add up. We’ll add another 30 percent onto an average fall run.” Despite the recent moisture, the drought is still dire in western North Dakota. “We got good moisture in the last week, about three inches of rain, which is more than we’ve had all year. It definitely helped put water into stock dams. It won’t cure the drought, we need more subsoil moisture.”
