The Biden Administration is taking action to address concentration within the meatpacking industry. In a White House briefing, National Economic Council Director Brian Deese cited the rising cost of food. “About half of the overall increase in grocery prices can be attributed to a significant increase in prices in three products: beef, pork and poultry,” said Deese. “In beef and in pork, we’ve seen double digit increases in prices over the last couple of months.” Four packers control anywhere from 55-to-85 percent of the beef, pork and poultry business. “When you see that level of consolidation and the increase in prices, it raises a concern about pandemic profiteering.”
