The McClusky, North Dakota area is dealing with D4, or exceptional, drought conditions and has been all spring and summer long. Paul Hagen at Mid-State Ag says there are areas where small grains and canola exceeded initial expectations; others did not. There is still potential for some of the corn and soybeans. “We’re at the end of the reproductive phase and they need more water,” says Hagen. “These recent rains may be enough to help the bottom of soybeans. Will they be 40-to-50 bushel? Probably not. But salvaging 30 bushel beans is doing pretty good this year.” Canola is a major player in the region, and Hagen expects “a big uptick in acres” in 2022 with the introduction of new LibertyLink straight-cut, non-shatter canola and the current price point.
