The concept of a national vaccine bank for animal agriculture was included in the last farm bill. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Director of Animal Health and Food Safety Policy Chase DeCoite says the federal government now needs to take the next step. “We encourage USDA to appropriately fund that and stock that bank with vaccines so we have measures in place to prevent a foot and mouth disease outbreak.” DeCoite also recommends farmers and ranchers have their own plan to prepare for a foreign animal disease outbreak.
