Van Ahn and Company market analyst Kristi Van Ahn says the grain market knows the spring wheat crop is not there in the Northern Plains. There’s been a lot of profit taking happening in the wheat in the last week. “When you have outside traders looking at the wheat complex, Minneapolis isn’t the cheaper buy. We know the crop isn’t there, but the next time we could see something happen in wheat is when the combines start to roll.” Van Ahn says a few farmer clients in the Red River Valley should start harvest soon. Until there’s yield confirmation, wheat demand needs to show up. “Basis levels haven’t done much. We need the demand.”
