In opening remarks during the South Dakota Governor’s Ag Summit, Governor Kristi Noem talked about beef industry consolidation. “Eighty-five percent of meat processing goes through four major packers and that’s exactly the wrong direction we need to go.” Noem welcomed the USDA’s new plan to address supply chain issues. She said it would be great if the Biden administration would dig into the Department of Justice investigations on meat packers and price manipulation. “South Dakota needs to get loud to make this happen.” Noem also met with South Dakota cattle groups during the summit. White River, South Dakota rancher Eric Iverson attended the meeting. “The governor sees the market challenges that are holding livestock producers hostage and how this will affect the landscape of South Dakota.
