The Minnesota Senate Agriculture Committee reviewed the nomination of Nicollet farmer Dean Compart to Board of Animal Health on Tuesday. Committee Chair Torrey Westrom was upset with action taken in the House to “politicize the Board of Animal Health.” Westrom said the Board of Animal Health must be able to objectively address animal disease, rather than get mired down in politics. During this past session, the ag policy bill called for the addition of a tribal member on this board. “Our Senate fought hard to make sure that was a livestock producer and not an activist.” CWD in the whitetail deer population was also cited as a political issue in the Minnesota Legislature.
