The Minnesota Soybean Checkoff is literally hitting the road this summer to promote new uses of soybean oil. CEO Tom Slunecka says the focus is on tires made from soybeans. “Goodyear has demonstrated that the performance of these tires made out of soybean oil is better than the performance of the tires made from petroleum.” It takes about a bushel of soybeans for each set of soy-based tires. “When you think of the millions of tires that Goodyear manufactures and sells, that can be a lot of soybeans.” The Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council and the county organizations are donating a set of these tires to local sheriff’s departments across the state. There’s also an online promotion where farmers can nominate worthy nonprofit groups in their community to receive these tires.
