In his address to Congress, President Joe Biden said every country should play by the same rules in a global economy. U.S. agriculture’s Number One export customer, China, was given special attention. “In my discussions with President Xi, I told him we welcome the competition (and) we’re not looking for conflict, but I made it absolutely clear that we will defend American interests across the board. America will stand up to unfair trade practices.” The U.S. and China agreed to the phase one trade deal in January of 2020 under President Trump. When he took office, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said China is living up to its responsibilities under the trade agreement, but admitted that could change at any time due to the complex relationship between the two countries.
