Farm groups and ag companies are asking Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg for immediate intervention to fix the container shipping crisis. Nearly 300 groups signed off on a letter to Buttigieg, saying this is “a dire situation.” For more than six months, ocean carriers have frequently rejected U.S. ag exports to send empty containers back overseas to keep up with the demand for consumer products. There has been congestion, delays and cancelations at the ports. The Specialty Soya and Grains Alliance estimates $1.5 billion in ag exports have been lost during this time.
