Basis levels are at historically narrow levels or even trading above par in some Northern Plains locations. Van Ahn and Company market analyst Kristi Van Ahn says these basis levels are just unreal. “A lot of that has to do with the fact there’s a healthy bid off the Pacific Northwest for corn and now, there’s ethanol plants and the elevator competing for corn and farmers don’t want to give it up.” Van Ahn says this is a good opportunity to make some sales if you have corn in the bin. “It’s something to consider if you want to move some corn right now, you have an opportunity with them going off the May contract now, versus dragging your feet one month from now and taking a 20 cent deduction.”
