EPA Administrator Michael Regan says the Renewable Fuel Standard will be a priority for the agency, but South Dakota Corn Growers Association Executive Director Lisa Richardson says how the EPA responds to the upcoming Supreme Court ruling on small refinery exemptions will be monitored closely. “Perhaps the EPA is waiting to see what the decision will be,” says Richardson. “As a reminder, the Obama administration didn’t waive individual small refinery waivers, the requirement was rolled back. We’re excited to work with the new administration and we think there’s an opportunity specifically in the carbon market for the ethanol industry, but this puts uncertainty out there. The ethanol industry has gone through tough times, especially in COVID.”
