On Friday, the USDA expanded eligibility for livestock producers in the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. American Farm Bureau Federation Economist Michael Nepveux says there will be an additional top-up payment for hog producers. “This actually goes back to the first CFAP, adjusting some of that formula. This payment will be based on hog inventory from April 16 to May 14. In the spring, the USDA didn’t have as much money and they only covered about 25 percent of what producers experienced as a loss. This new program bumps this up to 50 percent and they’ll add an additional $17 per head to producers who participated in the first CFAP.” Nepveux says producers that received the first CFAP payment will receive a payment right away. Hog producers that didn’t sign up for CFAP 1 are not eligible. There will also be benefits for contract poultry growers. Read more.
