On Tuesday, the South Dakota Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee will hear from the South Dakota Agriculture Department. Committee chairman VJ Smith expects there to be some questions on the proposed merger of the South Dakota Ag and Environment Departments. “We’ve been hearing from producers and some are concerned they would take second place to the environment and potential regulations; we hear that. The agriculture secretary assures me this is not the case. Wildlife groups in South Dakota are unanimous in opposition of combining the two areas.” Smith isn’t hearing many lawmakers discuss the merger out loud. There’s uncertainty of what will happen. The hearing with Interim South Dakota Agriculture Secretary Hunter Roberts will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
