In the January USDA report, 2020 sunflower production was at 2.98 billion pounds, a 52 percent increase from 2019. North Dakota remains the top sunflower state producing state at 1.34 billion pounds. South Dakota’s sunflower production increased to 1.17 billion pounds in 2020. “North Dakota set a new state record for production,” said John Sandbakken, executive director, National Sunflower Association. “The way we started out the marketing year with low stocks, we’ll be looking for more acres in 2021.” The sunflower prices are following the uptick in commodity prices. “For sunflowers to be considered in the rotation, we have to stay competitive. Crushers and processors are doing that.”
