American Crystal Sugar Company spent time preparing for the COVID-19 pandemic ahead of this year’s campaign. President and CEO Tom Aastrup says it’s been a focus for the cooperative since March. “In our factories, we’re doing everything you’ve heard and read about from avoiding employee gatherings, requiring masks and taking temperatures as employees enter facilities. We are making sure there are cleaning crews doing nothing but sanitizing cleaning areas and spreading out break rooms to maintain social distance,” says Astrup. “We did extremely well through the summer. Through the fall, as cases increase, it’s impacted our employees.” Astrup says there have been some positive cases, but he says employees are doing what they can to stay healthy. “Especially over the last few months, it’s been more of a constant in plants, impacting employees as much as you see in the community.”
