The American Crystal Sugar Company’s 2020 sugarbeet harvest was record fast and an improvement from 2019. “American Crystal managed to harvest more than 10 million tons altogether, not exactly where we want it to be,” said Dan Younggren, a farmer from Hallock, Minnesota. “We want to be around 11 million tons on the ground to maximize factory output. We fell a little short on production, but it was a whole lot better than the year before.” Yields for the co-op declined to 24.8 tons per acre, with an 18.4 percent sugar content. Timely rains in the north, flirting with too much rain south of there made an impact on the crop.” Due to a slightly smaller crop, sugar processing at the American Crystal factories is expected to wrap up between early March to the end of April. An average campaign would wrap up in early or Mid-May.
