A leadership change is coming for the House Agriculture Committee in 2021. Seniority plays a role in selecting leadership, but that’s not the only factor considered. Combest, Sell and Associates managing partner Tom Sell says the process also varies by party and chamber. “In the House, Democrats do it differently than Republicans. Democrats have traditionally favored seniority and Republicans base everything on a seniority system, but there are other factors that usually come into play.” Steering committees in both parties will recommend a candidate and the candidates would need to be elected to the position in caucus before anything is final. Democrats will return to Washington D.C. next week to begin the process and Republicans will follow. Northern Plains farmers are somewhat concerned what new leadership could mean for the upcoming farm bill. Sell says there’s good reason to be nervous in times of change, but also to keep the faith.
