Farm policy was a major part of the Prairie Public television debate between Representative Collin Peterson and his challenger Michelle Fischbach. Fischbach touted her experience in the Minnesota Senate, representing a district that has agriculture. “I’ve started an ag advisory committee that I deal with weekly to make sure we hear what is going on in the field. We have a farm bill coming up in 2023 and we need to start that conversation early and learn what is important to the farmers.” The seventh district is ranked fourth nationwide for its contribution to the ag economy. Peterson, who chairs the House Agriculture Committee, emphasized the importance of that position. “That’s a big deal in terms of getting things done,” said Peterson. “Any ag meeting in the House doesn’t start until I get into the room and it ends when I leave. The (agriculture) secretary calls all the time and his people call and ask for my advice, that doesn’t happen with a rank and file member.”
