South Dakota Senator John Thune says the USDA came up with a reasonably good formula for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, but improvements can be made. “In South Dakota alone, we’ve gotten more than $450 million for the program,” said Thune. “I’m glad USDA has extended the deadline and they’re planning to provide the additional 20 percent. The one thing that needs to be fixed is providing assistance to livestock producers who didn’t market livestock prior to the April 15 cutoff date.” Thune is also hopeful 2020 row crops will be a priority in any new assistance the USDA offers farmers and ranchers.
