The August 10th windstorm that hit Iowa damaged more than 14 million acres of cropland. Iowa State University Extension Agronomist Mark Licht says farmers wanted to know right away if the crop would recover. “That was a quick one to respond to; no, it doesn’t recover from this kind of wind event this late in the growing season.” In most cases, insurance companies have zeroed out those acres and there is no need to harvest those crops. That leaves a tremendous amount of residue in those fields. “That’s a lot of biomass that we’re trying to get decomposed before the next growing season.”
