The National Pork Producers Council is seeking more federal assistance for farmers dealing with a backlog of hogs due to the coronavirus pandemic. Vice President and Counsel of Global Government Affairs Nick Giordano said the request is open-ended, but could include a reimbursement for euthanizing animals and more direct payments to producers. “We really don’t know what the final damage is going to be and we know, having said that, no one will be made whole,” said Giordano. “We’re just trying to keep as many producers as possible in business.” Nearing the halfway point for the current Coronavirus Food Assistance Program sign-up, U.S. pork producers have received more than $394 million in payments. Chief Executive Officer Neil Dierks said there are some eligibility restrictions which could limit full participation in the current program. “On one hand, we were appreciative in getting assistance and the government did make some changes from the original program, but we still think there is more need out there and some limitations keeping the ability of some producers to take full advantage of the program.”
