Hazen, North Dakota farmer John Weinand is harvesting winter wheat. Dry conditions for much of the spring made this a variable crop. “We had the driest six months on record from January until the end of June. The rain finally caught up to average for June on the last day: 3.75 inches in 24 hours,” says Weinand. “The winter wheat proteins are pretty high at 13 percent, but the wheat yield is about half of what it should be. We cut one field that was 70 bushels per acre, but others are only running about 35 bushels per acre.” Weinand is about half done with the winter wheat harvest. This Harvest Hotline update is made possible by the North Dakota Mill, AgCountry Farm Credit Services and U.S. Custom Harvesters, Incorporated.
