Recent rains are welcome in the drier areas of the Northern Plains, but Bismarck-based National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Abeling says these aren’t drought-ending rains. Two to three inches of rain would be helpful in the short-term, especially in the west and central areas of North Dakota. “We are more than seven inches of rain in deficit in south-central North Dakota. Many areas are five to seven inches in deficit since the beginning of the year,” says Abeling. “It would take a substantial amount of rain to get us back to normal conditions.” Spotty thunderstorms are in the forecast as June transitions into July.
